BW Medical, a team of national medical accountancy specialists, has boosted its medical finance team with the appointment of Mark Dempsey, taking the number of employees at its offices in Newcastle to 13.
The niche firm, which currently acts for a large portfolio of medical professionals and GP practices across the country, is building on recent growth and has recruited Mark to further expand its team of highly specialised practice experts.
Mark, a chartered accountant originally from Southport, brings over 30 years experience in the finance industry to his new role. As medical services accountant, Mark is responsible for managing the clients' financial accounts, as well as providing strategic advice.
Mark's career in accountancy and finance began in 1984 when he joined BDO Reads Ltd in Guernsey. Over 14 years he trained and qualified as a chartered accountant, developing his role from audit senior to audit manager and then audit director. He has held a number of senior accounting roles over his career, including working as a project accountant within the financial control department of Deutsche Bank Offshore in Guernsey, Jersey and Dublin, where he was responsible for several projects in connection with the group's accounting and financial reporting systems.
Moving to the north east in 2004, Mark initially worked as a project accountant for Akzo Nobel, before taking up a role as corporate finance manager for a regional accountants, where he was responsible for services including business acquisitions and disposals, due diligence, business plans, financial forecasting, fund-raising and business valuations.
In 2007 Mark became finance director and company secretary for Connect Physical Health Centres Ltd, one of the largest independent providers of NHS Musculoskeletal (MSK) services which are delivered in the local community by chartered physiotherapists, specialist GPs and consultants. Working in an integrated way, they were contracted to deliver services to over 15 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) from London in the South, to Northumberland in the North.
During his time at Connect the company's turnover tripled in size and the number of employees grew by over 250 per cent. He was responsible for the day-to-day running and leadership of the finance and data department, financial modelling for NHS tenders and as a director was part of the Strategic Board.
